Past Simple vs. Past Continuous
1. Completed Actions vs. Actions in Progress
Simple Past: For finished actions at a specific time.
- "I watched a movie last night."(The whole action is done.)
Past Continuous: For actions in progress at a past moment.
- "I was watching a movie at 8 PM."(You were in the middle of it.)
2. Many Actions, one-after-another vs. Actions at the same time/Interrupted Actions
Simple Past: Lists completed actions one after another.
- "I finished work, walked home, and ate dinner."
Past Continuous: Shows parallel actions or interruptions.
- "While I was walking home, it started to rain."
3. Past Facts vs. Background Scenes
Simple Past: States facts or single events.
- "He broke his phone yesterday."
Past Continuous: Sets the scene for a story.
- "The sun was shining, and birds were singing when he dropped his phone."
4. Short Actions vs. Long Actions
Simple Past: Short, quick actions.
- "She answered the phone."
Past Continuous: Longer actions happening at the same time.
- "While I was cooking, she was studying."
